Summary 1:
Staninger talks about how Aladdin was a moneymaker for the Disney company. She was surprised that, at the time of the release, academics weren’t critical of the film. Her analysis is centered on Princess Jasmine, who is a pseudo-feminist and a pseudo-cross-model that the company thought they could put out. She poses the questions of why she has been appealing to American teenagers, what textual clues allow the audience to forget her ethnicity, and how women in Islam are represented. Jasmine was appealing due to her representation of a strong woman, American values, and vernacular. Jasmine’s faith is never addressed, which disregards her origins. This pushes the existing hostile view of the Middle East in its opening song. The features of Aladdin and Jasmine are more western in comparison to Jafar, who doesn’t share the same features. These edits further worsen the Arab image. Aladdin could be used as western propaganda because it presents the unworkability of the Middle East. Disney tried to defend itself by ignoring its criticism. The West looks at women in the Middle East as being behind in women’s rights. Shaban argues that western and Islamic women aren’t that different. Fatima argues that since the teachings of Muhammad, there have been women’s rights, but patriarchs manipulate religious teachings to control women. The Arabian Nights immortalized this image of Arab women without freedom, which symbolizes the Muslim eternal female. Staninger ends by assuming that we can watch Disney’s Aladdin without consuming its negative stereotypes.
Summary 2 :
Jasmine’s popularity is due Americanness. She looks western, song is rude,Scholars dispute MA women’s rights Arabian night effect stereotype, viewed without consuming stereotypes.
Reflection
Paraphrasing is the act of rearranging and swapping words in order to explain the same topic without changing its meaning. Paraphrasing is definitely harder than summarizing. If you are trying to paraphrase and make a sentence shorter, it ultimately changes the meaning of the text. The changing of the text could influence someone’s opinion or alter their understanding of the text completely. Summarizing is condensing something you’ve read to make it easier to understand and more concise. Often, people try to paraphrase and end up summarizing. Personally, I prefer summarizing rather than paraphrasing.
