Paraphrasing Haddway’s Arabian Nights

By SUNSHINEGIRL

Quote1 : Her father the vizier became furious and said to her, ‘Daughter, ‘He who misbehaves, ends up in trouble,’ and ‘He who considers not the end, the world is not his friend.’ As the popular saying goes, ‘I would be sitting pretty, but for my curiosity.’ I am afraid that what happened to the donkey and the ox with the merchant will happen to you.” She asked, “Father, what happened to the donkey, the ox, and the merchant?

Paraphrasing 1: Her father grew angry and said , “Daughter, ‘ Those who are disobedient, end up in trouble”, and ‘He who understands knows, the world is not his friend.’  I wouldn’t interfere in these matters had it not been my curiosity.” The father responds, “ I fear that what occurred to the donkey and ox and the merchant will happen to you. Shahrazad asks, “ What happened to them?

Paraphrasing 2; “ Those who are rebellious, end up in problems, and “He who sees, knows that the world is in fact not its friend, The father said.  I would sit here and do nothing but my curiosity prevents me from doing so, She said. “ I am afraid that what happen to the donkey, the ox and the merchant will occur to you, ” Her father remarked. She asks, filled with curiosity, “ what happened?”

Paraphrasing 3: The vizier said, “My child, Those who are defiant, end up in trouble, ” and “who understands knows, that the world is not a supporter.” She responds to him by saying, “ I wouldn’t act upon this need to do so if I weren’t motivated by curiosity.”  He warns her and says,

“I am afraid that you will suffer the same fate as the donkey, the ox, and the merchant”.  “ What was their fate?” Shahrazad asks.

Quote 2: He told him everything from beginning to end (but there is no point in repeating that). Then he concluded, “When I saw your own misfortune, I felt better—and said to myself, ‘My brother is king of the world, yet such a misfortune has happened to him, and in his very home.’ As a result I forgot my care and sorrow, relaxed, and began to eat and drink. This is the cause of my cheer and good spirits.”

Paraphrasing 1:  The brother told him his misfortune from the start to the end (but you know the story so why repeat it).  The King’s brother said, “When I saw all the horrible things that have happened to you, I felt better- and I said to myself, “My brother is a king, yet he is experiencing  horrible things in his very home.” The brother said with reflection, “ I forgot about my misery and I began to celebrate. This is why I am full of joy and happiness.”

Paraphrasing 2 : He told him his tale of woe from the beginning all the way to the end (but you all know  the story so why rewrite it). “When I saw all the wretchedness in your life,  I felt healed- and I thought to myself, “ My brother is a king, yet he has all these dreadful things happening to him in his own home.”  “ I had forgotten about all my troubles, I lounged and I began to drink, eat and celebrate, “the brother said.  This reflection is the very cause of my glee and chipper spirit, he added.

Paraphrasing 3: The brother told his brother his own tragedy from the beginning to the end.

“When I saw all the despair in your life, I compared my situation to yours, I felt better.  The brother thought to himself, and said “ My brother is a king, yet he is suffering  in his own home.”

“It caused me to forget my sorrows, and I laid back and began to eat and drink. This is the reason why I am filled with optimism and happiness, the brother concluded.

Reflection

I picked the first passage to paraphrase because I found the phrase “I would be sitting pretty but for my curiosity” interesting, as well as the section where the vizier talks about the world. The act of paraphrasing affected my understanding of the passage because I altered the text, making it easier to understand as someone from the 21st century. As I rewrote the passage, I found myself rearranging the syntax in hopes of understanding the sayings in the passage. I tried to make it clear who was talking to help my brain process it. When I got around to paraphrasing the third time, many words were changed, which could possibly change the meaning of the text altogether. The third time, paraphrasing was a little harder because I didn’t want to use the same phrases or lose the meaning of the text. The third time felt a little muddy. I picked the second passage to paraphrase because I found the brother’s reflection on his brother’s misery interesting. I thought about how my reflection could change the meaning and the reader’s comprehension.
